President Joe Biden’s administration is working to reduce its dependence on China and Taiwan for semiconductors.state Councilsaid today that the United States will work withMexicoCollaboration to explore semiconductorsthe supply chainopportunity.
Reuters reported that this US-Mexico cooperation will be carried out under the framework of the US CHIPS Act (CHIPS Act) which will take effect in 2022. The CHIP Act establishes a $500 million fund to work with allies and partners to develop the semiconductor supply chain.
“The production of essential goods, from vehicles to medical equipment, depends on the strength and resiliency of the semiconductor supply chain,” the State Department said in a statement.
The State Council also said the cooperation will begin with an assessment of Mexico’s existing semiconductor industry, regulatory framework and manpower needs.
Reuters asked Mexico’s economy ministry for comment on the State Department’s statement but did not immediately receive a response.
