South AfricaThe Transport Ministry said that today a bus fell from a bridge into a deep gorge and caught fire, due to which a total of 45 people, including 46 people traveling in it, died. The only survivor, an 8-year-old child, was seriously injured and has been sent to hospital for treatment.

The South African transport department said in a statement that the bus had come from neighboring Botswana and was heading to Moria in northern South Africa, Agence France-Presse reported.

“The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with the railing of the bridge, causing the vehicle to roll onto the bridge, hit the ground and burst into flames,” the statement said.

Rescue operations continued into the evening, with some bodies burnt beyond recognition, while others remained trapped under debris or scattered at the crime scene.

Local authorities said the bus had Botswana license plates, but the nationalities of the passengers have not yet been confirmed.
