Currently, Apple has shifted some models of iPhones to India for assembly, but there is no supplier of camera modules for iPhones in India. “Partnership with Titan or Murugappa Group could solve this problem,” a source close to the development told ET.

One of the people familiar with the matter revealed that Apple will finalize the cooperation within 5 to 6 months. Another person familiar with the matter said that camera modules are a key component and are currently “a major challenge” for Apple’s production in India.

According to an ET report on April 11, Apple plans to shift at least half of its supply chain to India and increase the output value added by suppliers by about 50% over the next three years.

People familiar with the matter said that starting from module assembly is a good foundation to attract various sub-assembly manufacturers and establish an entire value chain on-site, from image sensing to lenses to entire camera modules.

Chennai-based Murugappa Group is an industrial conglomerate with over 100 years of history with operations in engineering, financial services and chemicals. In 2022, Murugappa Group acquired 76% of camera module maker Moshine Electronics to expand its electronics and components business.

Titan specializes in the manufacturing of precision components for watches and jewelry. It is headquartered in Bangalore and owns Titan Engineering and Automation. It started as an engineering department for manufacturing and designing high-precision components and has expanded significantly and currently provides defense and aerospace services to global clients.
