The meeting between the two came as leaders of several countries, including US President Joe Biden, gathered in New York to prepare for the UN General Assembly. Also in attendance this year was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose government is relying on Musk’s Starlink service to repel Russian troops who invaded more than a year ago.
According to his office, Erdogan invited Tesla to build a new factory in Turkey. Musk’s SpaceX is supporting the country’s space program to launch communications satellites, and he wants to launch Starlink services in Turkey. Turkey is also seeking help in developing batteries for its local electric vehicle Tog.
Musk said in May that he could decide on the location of Tesla’s new factory before the end of the year. Before Turkey, India was also actively working on it.
The personal meeting allowed Erdogan to promote some of his ambitions, such as the launch of Turksat 6A, the first communications satellite, next June. Erdogan claimed that this was an important milestone and that the intelligence collected could be used for military purposes.
