Leaking water pipes turn roads into sewers for residents in Tainan

An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude in the morning in Hualien caused disasters at various places. At the intersection of Zhongzheng Road and Nanxiong Road Section 2 in Guanmiao District of Tainan, at about 8:10 p.m., it was suspected that the exhaust valve of the water pipe was broken. Water is leaking on the road due to ground shaking. The Sixth District Office of Taishui District said that the decision was takenEarthquakeThe exhaust valve leaked due to the shock. Emergency repairs were completed at 9:35. The remaining repairs to the road surface will be completed before closure of work today.

Eyewitnesses said that after the first wave of the strong earthquake in the morning, they saw water suddenly flowing from the intersection. Soon the road surface started looking like a stream and people passing by had to cross the stream. They thought it must be the effect of an earthquake.

The District 6 Management Office of Taiwan Water Supply Company said it is a 1,200 mm main pipe. Due to the earthquake’s shaking, the exhaust valve ball valve became misaligned, causing the main pipe buried under the asphalt road to leak. Concerned personnel arrived at the scene and completed the repairs at 9:35. Currently, only the road surface has been repaired, which is expected to be completed before work begins today.

The Taiwan Water District 6 office said the accident was caused by a temporary loss of pressure in the water supply pipeline after the earthquake, which once caused sporadic water outages in the Quy Non and Guan Miao areas. Water supply has been successfully completed.

The strong earthquake that struck Hualien was felt throughout Taiwan and at the Tainan Guan Temple, it was suspected that the drain valve of a water pipe was in the wrong place due to ground shaking, causing water to leak onto the street.
