Agence France-Presse reported that the Hague-based ICC said it had issued an arrest warrant for Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, Russia’s presidential commissioner for the rights of the child.
Russia is not a member of the ICC, and it is unclear how the ICC plans to enforce the warrant.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andrey Kostin said on social media: “The whole world has received a signal that the Russian regime is criminal and its leaders and accomplices will be held accountable.”
“This is a historic decision for Ukraine and for the entire system of international law,” Kirsten said.
“World leaders should think twice before shaking his (Putin’s) hand and sitting down for talks.”
Andriy Ermak, Ukraine’s chief of staff to the presidency, said today that the move was “just the beginning”.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also welcomed the news.
“The wheel of justice is starting to roll. I applaud the ICC’s decision. International criminals will be held accountable for child-lifting and other international crimes,” he added.
