AustraliaMan Johnson (Blake Johnson) today broke the world record for longest time surfing, extending the record from 10 hours to 40 hours.
AFP reported that 40-year-old Johnston, a former professional surfer, was in tears as he broke the previous record of 30 hours and 11 minutes set by Josh Enslin of South Africa.
Johnson faced a swarm of jellyfish and a dark sea that is home to a variety of sharks in front of hundreds of cheering supporters at Sydney’s Cronulla Beach.
After a brief break to eat and drink, he thanked supporters before returning to sea to try to push the record to 40 hours.
Johnson began the challenge at 1 a.m. on the 16th, using large searchlights to illuminate the sea. Sydney is currently beginning a short heat wave, and the water temperature remains a warm 24°C.
Johnson’s Record Challenges Publicitymental healthFundraising for the memory of my father who committed suicide 10 years ago. He eventually started over 700 waves and raised over 330,000 Australian dollars (about US$220,000). His official surf time record will be announced at a later date.
He originally planned to run a 1,000 km challenge to raise funds, but decided to surf after learning that his previous surfing record was “only” 30 hours.
Johnson expected the ear infection, dehydration and lack of sleep to push his body to its limits. His brother Ben said they were also prepared for the risk of shark attack.
This isn’t the first time Johnson has participated inmarathonA physical challenge competition. In 2020, he ran 100 kilometers along the rugged coastline south of Sydney, most of it barefoot.
